Responding to the U.S. trial verdict of former police officer Derek Chauvin
Today’s conviction of Officer Derek Chauvin in the murder of George Floyd represents a meaningful step forward in the ongoing struggle for justice and accountability. Still, there is so much more work to do in the fight for social justice worldwide. While welcome, this guilty verdict on all charges does not erase the pain of what has come to feel like an endless cycle of trauma, violence, and loss. In a just society, George Floyd and so many others would still be alive. Our hope is that this moment of accountability offers at least a small measure of relief to George Floyd’s loved ones, and hope to many more who still await justice.
