Kontraband teams up with the George Michael Estate for global merchandise deal

Kontraband, Sony Music UK’s full-service merchandise company, has announced an exclusive global deal with the George Michael Estate for the rights to design and distribute exclusive merchandise globally.

The deal expands on the Estate’s existing partnership with Sony Music UK, marking the first authentic and exclusive merchandise deal with the George Michael brand since 2011. “We are delighted to collaborate with the team at Kontraband to curate an exciting collection that creatively sets the bar and offers George’s loyal and new fans a unique range of merchandise he would be proud of,” said a spokesperson for the Estate.

“It’s an honour to be able to continue George’s incredible legacy,” said Nicola Tuer, COO, Sony Music UK & Ireland. “This partnership is an opportunity to remind fans of his cultural influence, boundless creativity and what a truly phenomenal artist he was.”

The new line of merchandise utilising the George Michael brand will be created in partnership with George Michael’s Estate and developed and distributed by Kontraband. It will feature original and bespoke products including limited edition prints, flasks, stationery, apparel and limited-edition figurines, plus special items by guest fashion designers.

“We are thrilled to be launching a brand-new selection of products showcasing the legacy of George and giving fans the overdue opportunity to own much anticipated official merchandise,” said Elliot Taylor, General Manager, Kontraband.

Sony Music UK announced the acquisition of British merchandise company Kontraband in September 2019. Since the acquisition, Kontraband has collaborated with our labels and worked on successful merchandise partnerships with artists including Nick Cave, Declan McKenna, Kylie and Nothing But Thieves.
